The infamous plastic shopping bag- once a symbol of cash and carry convenience in the modern age, has recently become the scourge of "Generation G" (for green of course!). As efforts to protect our environment become a necessity, rather than a passing fad, more and more people are looking for ways to reduce their impact on the planet. One of the easiest and most effective ways being forgoing the plastic and bringing your own re-usable bags for shopping.

The plastic grocery bag was first introduced to U.S. supermarkets in 1977. Although studies show that plastic bags use less energy to produce, transport and recycle than paper, they also show that the rates for plastic recycling are significantly lower than for paper products. When they are recycled, they can be incinerated for waste-to-energy, but this is still problematic, because of segregation difficulties for different materials, high contamination levels from food products and an underdeveloped market for use of the recycled product. Not to mention the fact they they are not biodegradable, unsightly when littered and pose infinite dangers to wildlife and young children.

Many countries and Eco-minded companies are taking steps to ban plastic bags altogether, or to charge for them, like Ikea where they cost customers $0.05 each. At vintage clothing re-saler Buffalo Exchange, each time you forgo a bag with your purchase you receive a token to drop in the charity box of your choice in the store. Each token represents a $0.05 donation to the charity in place of the cost of the bag you didn't use.

Your best bet still remains to bring your own reusable bags. Once associated with hippies, co-ops and hemp lovers, the only choice was often the typical off white canvas tote bag emblazoned with a particular store's logo (Trader Joe's anyone?).

Now, the Eco and fashion conscious have come up with scads of solutions for today's Eco-friendly hipster. Most notably, Anya Hindmarch's canvas bag with the slogan "I am not a plastic bag" (which I can't help but liken to Magritte's iconic surrealist painting entitled "Ceci N'est Pas Une Pipe" in it's tongue in cheek manner) has gained enormous popularity, being spotted on celebrities and supermodels alike.

Envirosax has created an option for those who don't want their main bag to be their carry-all. Their bags are lightweight, durable, waterproof, and best of all, roll up into a convenient 1.4 ounce package, perfect for storing in the bottom of your purse, backpack or glove compartment. They also come in a wide range of fun prints and colors at just $35 for a set of 5.

Susan Bijl's color block grocery totes, give a nod to the neon loving nu-rave craze that's hit the streets lately. Made of water repellent coated nylon, the 2 color bags come in assorted packs of 4 for just $28.

For those looking to do it the way some of our ancestors did, look to the ancient Japanese art of Furoshiki. These traditional wrapping cloths were first used in the Muromachi era, 1392-1573. Re-popularized by the Japanese environmental minister, she says that they can be used for most anything with a little ingenuity and wrapping skill. Lucky for us, they've even created a diagram of the folding plans, which you can download here!

Iconic Inspiration: Patti Smith

Last night I had the good fortune to see Patti Smith play the last night of her most recent tour, under the stars and by the sea at the Santa Monica pier- for free no less! She's a hero of mine and one of my all-time favorite musicians.

A feminist, political activist and fearless rock n' roll icon all rolled into one...what more could you ask for? Patti's personal style hasn't changed much since she first began performing in 1975, and with good reason. She found what works for her and sticks with it. Few people can do that and remain as timeless as she has. Her radiance and strength allow her to pull off a fairly androgynous/grunge look that on some could look haphazard, but on Patti looks just right. The image above is one of the most famous of her, and demonstrates just how stunning a classic white button-down shirt can be. Otherwise, she seems to be found most often in classic t-shirts with over-sized blazers, tight, skinny jeans and boots, a classic rock look if there ever was one. The thing I love most about her is that it seems she doesn't over think things- she wears what she likes and what feels good for her.

She continues to embody the punk rock/D.I.Y. spirit, as evidenced by her awesome t-shirt, (hard to see I know) a perfectly worn white tee with a peace sign drawn on with Sharpie marker! I may just have to copy this.

If you haven't heard any of Patti's music, I highly recommend you check her out now, not later. A good place to start would be with two of my favorite songs of hers (also two of her most moving in my opinion):

I happily went shopping at the Marc by Marc Jacobs store today here in L.A. to pick up a few goodies, and since alot of the best (and best priced, at mostly under $40!) stuff they have is only available in the store, I decided to pick up a few extras to put up for sale on Ebay, for all those who don't have access in their 'hood.

The term "Skinhead" is often associated with worldwide neo-nazi and racist groups- however, in it's purest sense, it describes a subculture movement rooted in music, fashion and rebellion that began in 1960's Britain and grew from there. Musically, tastes ranged from ska to reggae to soul to punk rock, and wardrobes drew inspiration from many Skinhead's Mod roots, adopting a more working class-friendly aesthetic. Some of the trademark looks include brogues, suspenders (or braces), loafers, steel toe boots and straight-leg jeans. These "Hard Mods" became known as skinheads because of their close-cropped or shaved hairstyles, which were quite contrary to the longer hippie and mod styles of the day.

Female skinheads were often called Chelsea Girls, in reference to their version of the boys' look. The Chelsea Girl hairstyle (also called a Feather Cut) is usually shaved or cropped everywhere, except for fringes on the front, side and back. This is one of my favorite hairstyles, and as you can see, I'm sporting a modified version in my profile picture. They had a sharp, modern fashion sense, often referenced by many designers today.

L.A. street style- accessories spotlight at Zineland

That's right kids, the street style posts are back! Here we are at the Hammer Museum for Zineland, a zine expo curated by Darin Klein.

I've been a long-time fan of the high waist, be it in denim, a skirt or dress. This pair of classic indigo blues has great detail. A gold bow cinches the back!

This girl is mixing and matching alot of classic yet current trends. The cut off jeans, with a twist, in black denim. The vest, a current obsession of mine, paired with a scoop neck (front and back) tee, ankle-laced flats and a tie-dyed slouchy back. it's hipster-ish hippie!

I looooooove this bag. A simple tote, with an eye-catching peacock print!

Iconic Inspiration- Marianne Faithfull

Clearly, I have a bit of an obsession with girls sporting 60's mod girl fringe and long hair. Marianne Faithfull is no exception. The daughter of a British military officer and a former ballerina/Baroness, she first became famous as a musician, then for her tumultuous affair with Mick Jagger and life threatening drug addiction. Since then she's rebuilt her career and gone on to be featured in some of my favorite films, Marie Antoinette and Paris Je T'aime.

She epitomized swinging sixties style with flirty babydoll dresses, knee socks and big, dark eyes. Her look can be easily replicated with a few visits to your local thrift store (or Ebay!). H&M currently has tons of adorable little frocks, including one almost exactly like the one below, in a rainbow of colors.

Add school girl knee socks and mary-janes to complete the look. Payless currently has a classic black patent leather style available in stores (I'd post a picture but their site is down for maintenance).

60's/70's "secretary" blouses like the paisley one below can usually be easily found at thrift stores. Throw it on under a jumper and you're set!

hot heat/L.A. streets

This will be the first in a regular series I'm calling "hot heat/L.A. streets" - basically mini trend reports on what's hot in my 'hood.

The cheapo Rite Aid canvas slip-on by Fun Steps has been flying sort of under the radar for the last few years, but making pretty steady appearances. This summer, they seem to have hit their peak. Similar in shape to the classic lace up Keds (which are also pretty hot here), these have no laces or zippers, and are generally white, black, navy or tan. Of course, the dirtier the better! H&M also carries a really cute version, a lace-up pointy toed canvas oxford, that I'm coveting in bright red.

They've been a long-time staple of scene kids, with an entry on Urban Dictionary no less!

I've seen them worn effectively with skinny jeans (soooo scene), vintage summer dresses and 70's or 80's high waisted shorts.

They usually run about $5.99, though I did snag a navy blue pair today on sale for $4.99! They're fun to collect and can be easily customized with a little ingenuity using markers, paint, trims, etc.

Iconic Inspiration- Faye Dunaway

One of the most gracefully aging actresses of our time, Faye Dunaway, is my favorite inspiration when it comes to searching out muses for 1920's ladylike, streamlined style. Two of her biggest hits, 1967's Bonnie and Clyde, and 1974's Chinatown are prime examples of the late 60's/early 70's re-interpretations of 20's style.

In Bonnie and Clyde she sports a sleek blonde chin length bob, with volume at the crown, oft imitated (but never as well duplicated) in recent years by starlets trying to re-vamp their images (see Nicole Richie and Jessica Simpson). Her wardrobe is a palette of muted, dusky earth tones- mostly ochre, navy, gray and pale rose colors.

No one wears a hat like she does, with those sky-high cheekbones and gorgeous pouty lips. She dons her signature beret in Bonnie and Clyde, and in Chinatown, she wears everything from seductive veils to rakish fedoras.

A similar palette and feeling can surely be found in Marc Jacobs Fall 'o7 RTW collection.

The look can also be duplicated with easily found thrift store basics like pencil or pleated skirts and 70's secretary blouses with tie necks and puff sleeves and light sweater vests.

Add a heeled oxford or specatator pump, red lips and sleek, shiny hair to complete the look!

Iconic Inspiration- Charlotte Gainsbourg

With cool as ice French pop god Serge Gainsbourg and edgy English rose Jane Birkin as parents, Charlotte was destined from birth to be a style icon. She is muse to Balenciaga's Nicolas Ghesquiere and the object of Gael Garcia Bernal's affection in Michel Gondry's critcally acclaimed "The Science of Sleep". All of this is with good reason- I myself am enchanted by her looks. She's very plain, but has the sweetest, most interesting face that you simply can't take your eyes off of. Her style is also unique. She's very laissez-faire, and her beanpole physique allows her to pull off a very minimalist style, without looking dumpy. She's known to wear classic items like soft sweaters, trench coats, skinny jeans and beat up cowboy boots. For evening she pulls out all the stops with avant-garde Balenciaga, but keeps it low key with little to no makeup and her signature mop of long wavy hair and mod-girl bangs.

The Brewery Art Walk Spring 2007

Twice a year, the world's largest artist's colony opens up for public walking tours of the residents live/work spaces and galleries. The Brewery art colony is located in downtown Los Angeles and is home to over 100 artists.

Words can't describe how amazing this place is. It's a 22 building complex comprised of former breweries (hence the name), LA's first Edison power plant and situated on 23 acres of land, with some of the buildings dating back as far as 1888! I wanted to camp out there and never leave, in the hopes that someone might take pity and let me live with them. Creative energy courses through the colony, and you get a real feeling of community.

For anyone who lives in and/or is visiting LA and has a vintage dress fixation like I do, you must check out the newly opened Ari. Located in a tiny space on the southeast corner of Olympic and LA Brea, this little gem literally spills out into the parking lot with a plethora of vintage dresses, all priced at $10-$12!
Needless to say, I'm hooked.

Iconic Inspiration- Jean Seberg in Breathless

Godard's title perfectly describes how one feels upon seeing Jean Seberg- breathless. She is absolutely exquisite and embodies a perfect example of new wave style. She also proves that short hair can be just as sexy as long, if not sexier. To recreate her look, I recommend shopping places like Petit Bateau for classic striped boatneck tees and Built By Wendy for simple cotton day dresses. Thrift stores are a great source for well cut vintage trench coats and your local army and navy surplus usually has a large selection of hats, so you're likely to find a fedora like hers for a reasonable price. For shoes, simple ballet flats work well and accessories should be kept to a minimum. Makeup should remain minimal as well, except for the ubiquitous cat's eye liquid liner on the upper eyelid.

Benjamin Cho- all I can say is whoa!

One of my favorite shows from fashion week, Benjamin Cho, Fall 2007. He chose incredible saturated colors, when everyone else was showing lots of grey and navy blue. I adore the giant geometric heart and gem adornments. All of it feels really wearable too, another huge bonus.

This last one with the hands "knitting" the dress as the model wears it feels like it's paying homage to a look from my one of my favorite films, George Cukor's 1939 masterpiece The Women. There's a techinicolor fashion show sequence with a model in a swimsuit covered up by an ivory colored cape that fastens closed with a mannequin's hand holding a silk rose, then opens to reveal a printed lining made up of hands holding roses, just like the outside closure. If you love fashion (especially of by-gone eras) run, don't walk, to see this film!

I have a love/hate relationship with Forever 21. I've been shopping there, well, forever. I even worked there for like a week in highschool, back when the only store in LA was at the Fox Hills Mall.
Love: the cute-ness of the clothes and affordable prices.
Hate: The poor fit and quality of some of said clothes.
However, sometimes the stars align and you can find some fabulous deals.

I've been searching high and low for some awesome tights, specifically in a bright acid green. Finally, I found a gem of a store in welovecolors.com.
A huuuuuuge selection of colors (over 45 to choose from!) in tights and footless leggings, plus awesome patterns and more. They also carry a large selection of plus sizes. Oh, they're also ridiculously affordable. Here's what I picked up for around $30, total:

Nars Lip Stain Gloss- I hate sticky, slimy lipgloss with a passion. It's been my mission to find something strong and "pop-y" that doesn't feel like 2 inches of oil slick on my lips. Well kids, I did, in the form of Nars Lip Stain Gloss. I've been looking for a flattering deep wine stain to no avail, and stumbled upon this product at Nordstrom. I picked it up in "Chandernagor", (not available on the site, but
check your local stores)a gorgeous deep, velvety berry stain that literally stays on for hours. Really. I mean it. Hours. Plus it feels like I have absolutely nothing on. Score!

This holiday season H&M is offering fabulous steals under their "gift of the day" deal.
One of my favorites is their velour tracksuit, for just $14.90! Tracksuits you say? Didn't those go out with Uggs?
Well, friends, my opinion is that if you want to be comfortable, yet instantly (and easily) pulled together, there is nothing like a good track suit. I sport mine with a pair of hot dunks, ghetto fabulous gold jewelry, and big shades, like in the picture below.

Those who know me, know that I love cheap stuff. Well, I guess I love expensive stuff too, but you need money for that! Part of it comes from my love of thrift shopping, and once you get used to those prices, anything over $5, seems like five million.
Thrifted shoes aren't always as easy to find, so I often rely on knock offs or places like Payless. If you have a good eye, you can walk away with some real gems.
I wasn't too impressed with their Abaete collection at first, but I stopped by today and found two pairs that set my heart a flutter.

Tiffany walked into my office today for a meeting, and I was struck by how casual and cool she looked, plus she's gorgeous! They don't show up that well, but she was wearing the most beautiful earrings that looked like leaves.

It's recently come to my attention that there is a gaping whole in the blogosphere where Los Angeles street style should be. This blog is my attempt to remedy that.
First, a couple disclaimers:

I am not a professional photographer
I will probably only update once a week (though I hope to more often than that)

That said, I plan to show that LA (and it's greater surrounding areas) can rival all the other amazing street style spots around the globe.
